In the mid-1970s the first portable, hand-held calculator became available to consumers. It was manufactured by Hewlett-Packard, and revolutionized the way people do math.  Although its use as a time and mistake saver is indisputable, there is still an ongoing debate concerning when children should be allowed to use a calculator in the classroom.
